About this book
A father tells stories while Verotchka drifts toward sleep, and a household of animals seems to gather around her window. D. N. Mamin-Siberiak's collection turns rabbits, insects and birds into talkative characters with very human troubles. One rabbit, tired of being frightened, boasts to his companions that even a wolf cannot scare him. Little Cacinella delights in sunshine and flowers, then meets other creatures who claim the same surroundings as their own.
The tales move between woodland encounters and the small world inside a house. In another episode, a fly enjoys warmth and plentiful food through winter but discovers how much she misses company. Repeated phrases, lively conversations and comic disagreements shape these children's stories. Readers can enjoy their animal characters while noticing the questions they raise about courage, selfishness and companionship.
