About this book
Mornings in Florence is by John Ruskin, M.A., and its contents list names The First Morning, The Second Morning and The Third Morning, among others. Under the heading The First Morning, Santa Croce, the text says that if there is one artist whose work it is desirable to examine in Florence, supposing you care for old art at all, it is Giotto. A passage says that the gospel of Works, according to St. Francis, lay in three things: to work without money and be poor, to work without pleasure and be chaste, and to work according to orders and be obedient.
A passage describes a Gothic cross vault in four quarters, each with a circular medallion painted by Giotto, with St. Francis himself over the altar. Under the heading The Fourth Morning, The Vaulted Book, the text proposes looking for a minute or two into the cathedral as early as may be this morning. A numbered note, 13, The Giving of Law, says more strictly, of the Book of God's Law: the only one which can ultimately be obeyed.
