About this book

A royal christening turns uneasy when an offended fairy arrives in a chariot drawn by dragons. That scene opens the first story in Katharine Pyle's collection of traditional fairy tales, told and illustrated for children. The contents bring together Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Aladdin and other familiar figures alongside shorter pieces such as Sweet Porridge and The Golden Key. Colour plates and smaller illustrations are part of the book's presentation.

The tales move between splendid castles and everyday troubles, using magical objects to set events in motion. In the passage from The Golden Goose, John carries a bird that leaves a growing procession of people stuck together behind him. Their predicament makes comedy out of an ordinary walk through town. For families reading aloud, the collection offers clear scenes, repeated actions and a range of stories suited to separate sittings.
