About this book

Snow weighs down the pine branches outside a forest hut while Maroosia and Vanya wait beside the stove for their grandfather's stories. Old Peter brings home a hare, prepares supper and tea, and settles the children into an evening of tales. Their cat Vladimir and dog Bayan belong to this household too, giving the storytelling frame the bustle and comfort of family life.

Arthur Ransome's collection retells Russian folk stories for children, with a contents page that includes Baba Yaga, a flying ship and a golden fish. In one tale, a goat scatters gold when it sneezes, an old woman secretly exchanges it for another goat, and strange forest children offer a wooden whistle in payment for stolen turnips. Repeated dialogue and sudden magical happenings give the stories a rhythm suited to reading aloud. The book offers readers a way into Russian fairy tales through both their wonders and the everyday warmth of the hut.
