About this book

A sudden fortune gives a Maine widow the freedom to buy almost anything, but deciding how to live with it proves more complicated. Mrs. Cliff prepares to return from New York to Plainton, where familiar rooms, old friendships and memories of her husband matter deeply to her. She hopes to enjoy her money while preserving her place among the people she has known for years.

Frank R. Stockton builds this novel around the everyday consequences of unexpected wealth. Plans for an enlarged home and a landscaped park sit alongside questions of hospitality, generosity and social standing. Willy Croup takes a keen interest in entertaining, while Mr. Burke finds a yacht for Mrs. Cliff to inspect in Brooklyn. These domestic details give the prospect of a vessel a personal context.

Frank R. Stockton (1834-1902) was an American writer and humorist who worked as a wood engraver in Philadelphia before turning to fiction and children's writing in his thirties. He is best remembered for "The Lady, or the Tiger?" (1882), a story whose withheld ending became a national parlor argument, and for the Rudder Grange books that began in 1879.
