About this book

A snowy woodland outing opens this collection for young readers, where a chase after a rabbit leads into a much wider assortment of animals, places and curious events. Frank R. Stockton mixes short stories with explanations of natural history, travel and everyday wonders. His preface promises visits below the earth and above it in a balloon, alongside birds, insects, old buildings and occasional fairies.

The variety extends to the practical details of climbing mountains: spiked shoes, pointed poles, ladders and ropes all have their part. Another passage considers a frightening account of an eagle carrying off a child, then weighs how unusual such attacks are. This conversational approach gives the collection its character, moving between storytelling, observation and explanation. Readers interested in older writing for children can see how adventure and informal lessons share the same pages.

Frank R. Stockton

Frank R. Stockton (1834-1902) was an American writer and humorist who worked as a wood engraver in Philadelphia before turning to fiction and children's writing in his thirties. He is best remembered for "The Lady, or the Tiger?" (1882), a story whose withheld ending became a national parlor argument, and for the Rudder Grange books that began in 1879.
