About this book

A quiet afternoon in a military camp near Poperinghe turns abruptly dangerous when an aircraft attacks the observation balloons overhead. Derek Vane and his fellow officers are joking together when the day's routine gives way to the sudden cost of battle. H. C. McNeile opens this First World War novel with ordinary camp routines, a Belgian farmer at work and moments of comedy set beside scenes of loss.

A conversation between Vane and Joan turns into a playful account of a dinner and dance. Their exchanges touch on wealth, attraction and the divide between officers home from fighting and the social world around them. Mufti offers readers a mixture of military experience, romantic feeling and pointed social observation, with lively dialogue linking the battlefield atmosphere to personal relationships.
