About this book

A lakeside holiday offers Edward Blackton a chance to imagine what wealth could buy him: influence, protection and the freedom to pursue excitement. Looking across the water towards the mountains of Savoy, he talks with his companion about exchanging their precarious profession for a more respectable use of their talents. Two important figures from the diamond trade arrive with urgent business, and Blackton turns to his private collection of information about wealthy people.

The novel moves from hotel luxury to the wreckage of Professor Goodman's laboratory. An explosion tears through the house, while Blackton continues arranging his scheme through coded messages, paid agents and a planned impersonation. Dry remarks from the household staff interrupt the danger with comedy.
