About this book
Mugby Junction by Charles Dickens is the extra Christmas number of All the Year Round, 1866, and its index lists Barbox Brothers, Barbox Brothers & Co., The Boy at Mugby and The Signalman, each by Charles Dickens. Branch lines in the index carry further pieces titled The Engine Driver, The Compensation House, The Travelling Post-Office and The Engineer.
A traveller called Barbox Brothers asks Mr. Lamps where he sang the songs, whether in a public-house, and Mr. Lamps returns the curious reply Bedside. Another speaker recalls that before the railway the driver of the mail-coach was the biggest man he knew, and that he thought he should like to be the conductor of an orchestra. Another narrator tells of a man who, dismissed as convalescent, tottered out through the hospital gates leaning on the narrator's arm, feeble as an infant, and whose lungs were injured beyond hope of remedy.
