About this book

A narrator sets off through Cornwall on a slow local train, intending to inspect a Norman church porch. A strange musical scene in a meadow changes his afternoon: railway workers are dancing while a flute and concertina play. His curiosity leads to a later conversation with their foreman, Joby Tucker. Arthur Quiller-Couch uses the leisurely pace, country scenery and local speech to prepare the opening story's account of an absurd interruption to everyday work.

News from the Duchy collects short stories with humour and a strong sense of place. A naval episode brings a different urgency, as Lieutenant Lapenotiere delivers a dispatch from the fleet to Lord Barham in the early morning. The official's hurried dressing provides comic detail before the news turns serious. Readers interested in regional storytelling can follow the shift between a railway worker's lively explanation and a formal meeting where public events reach the room through one messenger.
