About this book
My Summer in a Garden is by Charles Dudley Warner, and its front page pairs it with Calvin, a study of character. The contents list, among others, weeks from the first week to the nineteenth week, and also Calvin. An introductory letter begins by saying that the writer did promise to write an introduction to these charming papers.
One passage speaks of offering the fruit of a garden, which has been gathered from week to week, without much reference to the progress of the crops or the drought. Another passage says: I wish there was more demand in our city markets for pusley as a salad. I can recommend it. A further passage describes someone who was pretty sure to be waiting near the gate, who would rise and saunter along the walk as if his being there were purely accidental, and who kept the run of dinner-time.
