About this book
The Golden House is a book by Charles Dudley Warner. One scene is set near midnight, when a company gathered in a famous city studio is under the impression that the end of the century is a time of license if not of decadence. Edith follows a man with her eyes as he leaves, hears the outer door close, and still sits at the table, and life does not seem to her quite such a simple problem as it had looked a year ago. A speaker says he has to go up to the riding-school to see a horse, and then down to Twist's to see a lot of Japanese drawings.
The party is expected at Bar Harbor, and Major Fairfax is among the first to welcome them as they land and stroll up to the hotel. A woman makes up her mind that she would go to the city and seek him, though it was what he had written that she must not on any account do.
