Roberts tries to capture Napoleon's physical and intellectual energy and the force of his personality, which impressed even his enemies, and he argues against several long-held opinions about the man.

The book won the 2015 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for biography. It follows Napoleon from his Corsican childhood through his rise, the wars across Europe and the years of exile, in a single large volume.
