About this book
National Epics by Kate Milner Rabb is intended as an introduction to the study of epics and presents condensations of the original poems. The preface says that an effort has been made to preserve characteristic epithets and retain the simple truth about the matter of each poem. The preface describes a sketch before each story that briefly gives the poem's length, versification, and history, and expresses a belief in its value.
An account describes Vishnu appearing with a horse and a flame issuing from the indignant deity's mouth to destroy the six myriad sons of Sagara. The adventure passes to Ansuman, the sons' brother, who achieves it successfully and is permitted to lead away the horse. Selections from The Song of Roland describe the French rear guard under Roland being attacked at Roncesvalles by a great host of Moors.
