About this book
The Browning Cyclopædia is a guide to the study of the works of Robert Browning. A biographical entry describes a mediæval doctor and magician born at Cologne in 1486 and educated at the university of that city. The entry for Alberic identifies him as the son of Eccelino the monk and records the poem's description of his muscular build.
An explanation of a poem describes a superhuman woman who has entranced a young man enamoured of her heavenly perfections. The explanation calls the woman's task impossible: the young man must traverse coloured beams and return without their tint. The commentary describes the breaking of pure white light into the coloured rays of the solar spectrum as a favourite light metaphor.
