About this book

Before circus cages and performing tricks enter his life, Nero lives with his lion family in an African cave. His brother Chet, sister Boo and mischievous friend Switchie make this a children's animal story told through familiar family scenes. Nero wants to play, while his mother warns him about hunters and the trouble that can follow an adventurous companion.

Richard Barnum gives the animals speech and feelings, with a narrator who pauses to explain their habits in terms young readers will recognize. At the circus, Nero meets Tum Tum the elephant, learns what a trick is and tries to balance on his hind legs. His curiosity about this new place sits alongside homesickness for the jungle. The book combines playful conversations with changes of setting, offering a simple chapter story about a young animal learning how an unfamiliar world works.
