About this book
A wet alley cat gives Elmer Elevator an unexpected way to pursue his wish to fly. After the boy offers her shelter and secretly brings her milk, she tells him about Wild Island, where the animals have tied up a young dragon and made him carry them across a river. Elmer plans to reach the island and help the dragon, packing a knapsack with ordinary things that may prove useful in unfamiliar company.
Ruth Stiles Gannett tells this children's adventure through a narrator recalling the exploits of a father as a boy. The island's talking animals bring danger, vanity and comic misunderstandings into Elmer's path. Tigers become absorbed in chewing gum, while a rhinoceros worries about the color of his tusk. Short chapters and practical puzzles give the story its pace, making it a choice for readers who enjoy resourceful children, unlikely friendships and fanciful animal encounters.
