About this book

Newfoundland and the Jingoes, with the subtitle An Appeal to England's Honor, is by John Fretwell. The book carries a quotation saying that to be taken into the American Union is to be adopted into a partnership, while to belong as a Crown Colony to the British Empire, as things stand, is no partnership at all. The text says a better route, open all the year round, is that from Port aux Basques to Neil's Cove, a distance of only fifty-two miles by sea.

The text says that, with all its faults, British rule has one advantage over that of all other colonial powers: it gives the foreigner, no matter what his faith or nation, exactly the same commercial rights as the British subject. A note on authorities says the author has drawn largely on the well-known works of Hatton and Harvey, Bonnycastle, Pedley, Bishop Howley, among others. One argument in the text is that Great Britain should, for a reasonable compensation, cede this island to the United States. The author says he is perfectly sure that the majority of the 200,000 inhabitants would not have the slightest objection to exchange the Union Jack for the stars and stripes.
