About this book
Duncan Campbell wrote History of Prince Edward Island, and its preface says the principal aim of the Author has been to produce a History of Prince Edward Island. The preface says the history runs from the period it became a British possession until its recent union with the other confederated provinces of British North America. The preface describes a history which might claim some degree of merit as to conciseness, accuracy, and impartiality.
Captain Holland is quoted on the soil: on the south side of the island it is a reddish clay, though in many places it is sandy, particularly on the north coast. A quoted passage says there are about thirty Acadian families on the island, who are regarded as prisoners, and kept on the same footing as those at Halifax. In April, 1853, the Honorable Charles Young and Captain Swabey resigned their seats as members of the executive council. The text says the manufactures of the island are such as promise further development, and that the importance of diminishing the import of articles which can be produced cheaply on the island as elsewhere cannot be overestimated.
