Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America is a 2001 book by the journalist Barbara Ehrenreich. After the 1996 welfare reform, she set out to find out whether a person could live on the wages of an unskilled job.
She took a series of low-paid jobs, as a waitress in Florida, a cleaner in Maine and a shop assistant in Minnesota, and tried to pay for housing and food on what she earned. Her report shows the hidden costs that keep low-wage workers poor and questions the idea that such work is a step to something better.
