About this book

Voting rights sit beside schooling, wages and legal status in Käthe Schirmacher's survey of women's organized campaigns. Published in English in 1912, the book follows national movements through an international network of councils, clubs and suffrage leagues. Its contents range from the United States and Australia to European countries, India, China and Japan. Schirmacher presents education, freedom of occupation, equal pay and recognition before the law as connected demands.

The German section gives these broad aims a more personal and practical shape. Minna Cauer organizes an association for women employees, while Jeannette Schwerin builds an information bureau for social work and presses for women to serve as poor-law guardians. Disagreements among radical, conservative and socialist groups show how reform coalitions develop competing priorities. Readers interested in the history of political organizing will find names, membership figures and accounts of cooperation alongside advocacy.
