About this book
Nineteen Centuries of Drink in England by Richard Valpy French is a history whose contents include a contribution to the bibliography of drink. The discussion of cider records competing claims about promoting long life, curing dropsy and causing disease through its effects on the kidneys. The account of hospitality describes keepers of open houses established for that purpose during the time of the Druids.
The discussion of drinks distinguishes metheglin, braggot and mead by strength and also identifies cider and perry as drinks of parts of the isle. The account of society says far less is drunk in higher circles than formerly and describes excess as practically unknown in the more select clubs.
