About this book
Charity takes the Spirit of Cant on a tour of New York in this comic verse satire by Q. K. Philander Doesticks. The Spirit has been stirring up complaints against wealthy citizens, but his companion points to the Cooper Institute and the Astor Library as examples of money spent for public benefit. Their stops turn an argument about rich and poor into a lively exchange between two allegorical figures.
Published in 1857, the poem answers fashionable attacks on high society with jokes, exaggerated speeches, and a narrator who repeatedly interrupts his own account. Streetcars, elaborate skirts, library shelves, and a visit to a saloon give the social argument a busy city setting. Readers interested in American humorous verse can see how Doesticks uses rhyme and theatrical comedy to challenge easy assumptions about generosity and social standing.
