About this book

An old coat hanging in a parish church becomes the cause of an outsized quarrel in Laurence Sterne's satire. Trim wants to turn it into winter clothes for himself and his wife, and the newly arrived parson is ready to help. Before granting permission, however, he checks whether the garment is his to give. A discovery in the parish register sets private advantage against the obligations attached to a public gift. The story unfolds as a letter explaining how this small dispute has unsettled village life.

The appended Key introduces a political club in York, where members debate what the tale really means. They identify village figures with rulers and assign grand political meanings to worn clothing. Interruptions and a misunderstanding over an allegory keep their discussion comic. The book offers a compact example of satire built from ordinary objects, competing claims and the confidence with which people interpret one another.
