About this book
Richard Gooch’s Nuts to Crack is subtitled Or, Quips, Quirks, Anecdote and Facete of Oxford and Cambridge Scholars. The preface says its writer intends this preface, prelude, or proem shall occupy but a single page, and finds there is so little to say. The text says two singular productions were subsequently published together by Hearne, the Oxford antiquary. The text says Dr. John Caius, it is said, died of literary mortification.
The text says a sore discord fell out between the Cistercian and Benedictine monks, concerning several philosophical points discussed by them in the schools. The text says that, their arguments being at length flung aside, the monks decided the controversy by blows, which, with sore scandal, continued a considerable time. The text says that by the use of logic, and the trivial arts, the Oxford sophists, in the time of Lent, broke the king’s peace.
