About this book

Ocean's Story, by Frank B. Goodrich, is a graphic description of maritime adventures, achievements, explorations, discoveries and inventions, and of the rise and progress of ship-building and ocean navigation from the ark to the iron steamships. The text says its pages take as their theme a multitude of attendant incidents, accidents, battles, disasters, shipwrecks, famines, robberies, mutinies, piracies.

The text quotes a passage from Dr. Greenwood's Poetry and Mystery of the Sea, which includes the Psalmist of Israel's cry, The sea is his, and He made it. The text says Tasman was led to believe large mines of loadstone to exist in the vicinity, and that on the 24th of November land was discovered and given the name of Van Diemen's Land. The text says an accurate determination of the temperature at different depths is certainly the best, and frequently the only means, for determining the depth, the width, the direction and general path of the warm ocean currents.
