About this book

A rubber band around a globe supplies Ernest Ingersoll with a simple way to show how much of Earth belongs to the ocean. From that opening demonstration, he turns to ancient ideas about the sea and a nineteenth-century scientific account of its origins. Explanations of erosion, the formation of rock layers and the names of oceans establish the physical setting for a wide survey of maritime life.

The chapter plan brings natural history together with ships and the people who use them, covering voyages, polar exploration, commerce, fishing, sea plants and marine animals. In the naval section, Ingersoll explains the shift to steel vessels and describes how double bottoms and separate watertight compartments help ships remain afloat. Published in 1898, this illustrated work offers readers a view of ocean science and maritime technology as they were presented to a broad audience at the end of the nineteenth century.
