About this book
Old Familiar Faces, by Theodore Watts-Dunton, is a volume of the recollections of his friends that he had from time to time contributed to The Athenæum. The introduction says it was the intention of Theodore Watts-Dunton to publish in volume form, but that he was, unfortunately, very slow to write, and slower still to publish. A recollection of Swinburne has him half rise from his chair to reach across the table for the manuscript and exclaim that she is as a god to mortals when compared to most other living women poets.
The book also records that many of Swinburne’s friends have testified to his personal charm and courtliness of bearing. The writer calls the characters of ‘In Gypsy Tents’ as realistic as though painted by Zola, though depicted by a man of remarkable talent merely. The writer says Borrow, the man of genius, throws the colours of romance around his gipsies by the very necessities of his temperament.
