About this book
Eccentricities of Genius is by James B. Pond, with 91 portraits, and dates from 1901. The contents list orators including John B. Gough, Wendell Phillips, William Lloyd Garrison, Charles Sumner, Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington, then a group headed Pulpit Orators that includes Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. The text also tells of Mr. James Redpath, born in Berwick-on-Tweed, England, August 24, 1833, who came to this country in 1848 with his family.
A passage says Mr. Phillips was quite an adept with tools, keeping the household goods always in repair. Mr. Phillips’s repertoire is called encyclopædic, embracing a vast list: travel, science, current politics, reform, labor, anti-slavery and education, with titles such as Street Life in Europe, The Lost Arts and Temperance. A London letter of May 31, 1894, gives an account of electioneering methods, and Mr. Stanley writes “I see that you scarcely comprehend what the term electioneering means in England.”
