About this book
Old Mackinaw, or The Fortress of the Lakes and its Surroundings, is a book by W. P. Strickland. The text says that on the far-off shores of the northwestern lakes the Jesuit Missionaries planted the cross and erected their chapels. The text says the territory of the Ottawa chief was enlarged, and that from one point he sallied forth every summer in war excursions toward the south.
The site of Old Mackinaw, now the county seat of Emmet county, and its surroundings, belonged to the Government of the United States until the year 1853. A company consisting of seven persons is described as entering at the Land Office in Ionia, Michigan, near one thousand eight hundred acres. Whitefish are described as a great favorite with the Indians, with an ordinary weight from 3 to 5 lbs, length 15 inches.
