About this book
Cold rain, missing provisions and wandering horses quickly unsettle the enthusiasm of the Pretoria men leaving for war. Dietlof Van Warmelo recalls joining the commando with his brother Frits in September 1899, then crossing into Natal and approaching Dundee. His account follows the practical difficulties of campaigning as closely as the fighting: finding food, preparing meals, keeping equipment usable and enduring nights on the open veld.
Written in 1901 while Van Warmelo was a prisoner at Ahmednagar, this personal narrative draws on recollection rather than a surviving diary. The author acknowledges possible gaps in dates, numbers and place names. Alongside military movements, he records a hazardous attempt to catch eels near the Sabie and the slow work of hauling wagons up a steep mountain. Readers interested in the South African War can find a participant's view of its daily hardships, companionship and early expectations.
