About this book
Three Years' War is by Christiaan Rudolf De Wet, who says in his preface that it was his duty to record his personal experiences in this war, for the present and for the future generations. The preface calls the war a struggle in which a small people fought for liberty and right. In a chapter headed I am Appointed Vechtgeneraal, the author says that up to the 9th of December he had only been a Vice-Commandant, but on the morning of that day he received a telegram from States-President Steyn, asking him to go to the Western frontier as Vechtgeneraal.
A report of an engagement says Commandant Mentz had with fifty burghers stormed a ridge, shooting down from thirty to forty of the enemy, and taking twenty-five prisoners. The author writes that he does not give any report of the various engagements, as he was not present at them.
