About this book
On Sunset Highways is a book of motor rambles in California by Thos. D. Murphy. The travellers were shown the mission bells, two of which are one hundred years old, suspended by rawhide thongs from the beams on the roof. The guide told the travellers that no less than four thousand Indians were buried in the cemetery garden during mission days.
At an altitude of seventy-four hundred feet the travellers had a vast panorama of lake, forest, and mountain. For a dozen miles after leaving Myers the road ran alternately through forests and green meadows, and the writer says the meadows about Tahoe remain green the summer through. The text says the work of mission building was done by the natives under the direction of the padres, and hard work it was, for the stone had to be quarried and dressed.
