About this book
On the Ethics of Naturalism examines ethical ends, the practical systems they produce, and the conditions required for judging between them. The argument requires proposed ends or principles to be established as necessary alternatives rather than accepted uncritically from common sense or the commonplaces of schools. The discussion allows that different assumed principles may yield practical rules which are internally consistent while remaining inconsistent with one another.
The examination of pleasure considers a theory connecting pleasure with increased life and another connecting pleasure with unimpeded conscious functioning or medium activities. The argument rejects the possibility of establishing that every pain corresponds to diminished vitality and every pleasure heightens vitality.
