About this book
On the Prospects of Christianity is a preface to Androcles and the Lion by Bernard Shaw. The contents list headings that ask why not give Christianity a trial, why Jesus more than another, whether Jesus was a coward and whether Jesus was a martyr.
Under the heading Was Jesus a Coward?, the text reports a great deal of hearty dislike of Jesus among people who are really free to think for themselves on the subject. The text says that Christianity, good or bad, right or wrong, must perforce be left out of the question in human affairs until it is made practically applicable to them by complicated political devices. The text reckons over three hundred and forty-two and a quarter million heretics to swamp forty-five million Britons, of whom, by the way, only six thousand call themselves distinctively "disciples of Christ."
