About this book
Nobbs recalls receiving just forty-eight hours' notice to leave Fovant for France. His account of the First World War begins with orders, hurried packing and farewells, capturing the abrupt change from camp routine to active service. In the preface, he sets out the scale of his experience: five weeks on the firing line and three months as a prisoner of war. He also explains that he lost his sight and that most personal names have been changed.
The memoir gives particular weight to the families waiting at home, whose anxiety Nobbs places beside the dangers faced by soldiers. A later passage describes his struggle to understand his surroundings after being wounded in a shell-hole, and Arnold's attempt to secure help. Readers interested in personal wartime testimony will find attention to comradeship, uncertainty and the ordinary arrangements that surround a soldier's service.
