About this book

Sixteen-year-old Milly Ridge arrives in Chicago with high hopes for a settled home. The shabby house her father has chosen on the West Side brings those hopes sharply down to earth. Her optimistic father points out its practical advantages, while her grandmother rebukes Milly's complaints. Robert Herrick builds the opening around this family argument, making a cramped house and an ordinary street reveal the distance between Milly's expectations and her circumstances.

Later, Milly moves among painters and their companions at a seaside hotel with her artist husband. A Russian woman's confidence in arranging an old house, and her frank account of married life, give Milly fresh material for comparison. Meals outdoors become occasions for talk about pictures and competing ideas. The novel offers readers a close study of social ambition, domestic expectations, and the way Milly measures her own life against other people's advantages.
