About this book
Jack Darcy and Fred Lawrence grow up as close friends in Yerbury, where Fred's father owns Hope Mills and Jack's father works there. Their bond troubles the Lawrence women, who judge companionship by family standing and money. Jack's practical strength and Fred's ease with words give the boys different ways of helping each other, while young Sylvie Barry bristles at the family's dismissal of Jack.
Amanda M. Douglas builds this novel around the pressure that social rank puts on personal loyalty. The opening moves between school memories, family histories and sharp exchanges inside the Lawrence home. A later scene shows Fred supporting his sister Irene when an advantageous marriage becomes a source of bitter conflict. Friendship, dependence and the price of comfort connect the household drama to the mill town around it. Readers interested in American fiction about class can find those divisions expressed through everyday conversation and private decisions.
