About this book
Lawrence Perry follows the United States Navy's response to the submarine threat during the First World War. Published in 1918, this illustrated account opens with Woodrow Wilson addressing naval officers aboard the Atlantic Fleet's flagship in the early summer of 1917. From that scene, Perry turns to destroyer patrols, armed merchant vessels, convoys, naval aviation and the work required to bring ships into service.
The chapters connect encounters at sea with the machinery and organization behind them. Camouflage, repairs to former German liners, reserve training, food and fuel sit alongside accounts of rescue and combat. In the account of the San Diego's loss, survivors await help while a seaplane and wireless messages summon assistance.
