About this book
Our Stage and Its Critics is a book of 1910 by Edward Fordham Spence. The contents list gives Chapters I, II and III the heading The Dramatic Critic, with topics among others such as his stock phrases and his fear of libel actions. Chapter IV is headed Plays of Particular Types, with topics among others the Pseudo-Historical, the Horrible in Drama and Scripture Plays.
The text asks how our dramatists and the French manage to get a first-hand study of the real aristocracy. A section headed Stage Meals tells of an undistinguished foreigner from France who, when questioned, was found to admire most the way stage meals are treated in our theatre. The text says Charles Reade, whose book is called "The Cloister and the Hearth", was absolutely stagestruck and wrote dozens of plays.
