About this book
At seventeen, Philip Troubridge serves as a midshipman apprentice aboard the Salamis, a passenger clipper sailing from London to Melbourne. Captain Martin presses the ship hard in pursuit of a fast passage, and an accident aloft brings the hazards of that ambition into view. Harry Collingwood sets the novel in the era when sailing clippers carried passengers and mail around the Cape of Good Hope, with steamships beginning to challenge their place on the ocean.
Troubridge's account makes practical seamanship part of the adventure. The opening follows watches, sail handling and changing weather, while a later passage shows him sounding a lagoon to find safe anchorage. His concern for the exploring party clashes with their disregard for his instructions and with Wilde's proposed island life. For readers drawn to sea fiction, the interest lies in a young sailor's responsibility, technical judgment and desire to regain his freedom.
