About this book

Paris Vistas is by Helen Davenport Gibbons, with sixteen illustrations by Lester George Hornby. The foreword says that Webster defines a vista as a view, especially a distant view, through or between intervening objects. In the foreword, the writer supposes that, were the writer literal-minded, the title would have to be abandoned or the book made a series of descriptions of Sacré Coeur, crowning Montmartre.

The text advises, for a reader who believes in the value of first impressions and is in a mood to love Paris, planning the introduction to the queen of the world for an evening in June. The text says that in Paris everybody is accustomed to purchasing things to eat and drink of the best quality, and that single chops, tiny cutlets and roasts, and chickens of all sizes are displayed side by side on the meat counters, each with its price marked. A scene has a man calling a soldier and saying to take this lady to get her photograph made.
