About this book
Wedding preparations fill the Allen home in Philadelphia, where Patty is helping her friend Nan get ready to marry Patty's father, Mr. Fairfield. Between unpacking presents and admiring bridal clothes, Patty shares her plans to finish school a year early. Carolyn Wells sets the family's cheerful teasing beside a practical concern: Patty is working hard to earn the freedom she wants for the following year.
A later outing pairs antique hunting with the uncertainties of early motoring. Patty offers a shopkeeper more than the asking price for two valuable plates, while Elise gives money to help the woman's son in hospital. Outside, their disabled car requires a wagon and four horses. These scenes give this children's novel its mix of social comedy, friendship and small tests of generosity, with wedding customs and car travel supplying concrete details of its period.
