About this book

Griselda arrives at an old house whose quiet routines seem to leave little room for a child. Her great-aunts, Miss Grizzel and Miss Tabitha, value neatness and order, while the dark passages and terraced garden give her plenty to wonder about. A cuckoo living in a clock becomes a source of companionship, linking the familiar household to the possibility of fairy life.

Mrs. Molesworth's children's fantasy gives as much attention to Griselda's moods as to the house's mysteries. She wishes the cuckoo would speak to her while neglecting the lessons she should prepare. Her discontent troubles her aunts, and her idleness and resentment make an otherwise comfortable evening feel miserable. The story offers readers a child's view of an unfamiliar home, with ordinary demands for good behaviour set beside her hope of finding a friend in an unlikely place.
