About this book
The Nile provides the starting point for James Baikie's account of ancient Egyptian life. He explains how its valley, delta and yearly floods supported farming in a land with little rain, then turns toward the people and buildings of the distant past. First published in 1912, this illustrated introduction ranges from days in Thebes and the household of Pharaoh to soldiers, children, books, temples and tombs.
Historical explanation shares space with old tales. In one passage, the magician Dedi appears before King Khufu, while a story about three children links divine intervention with royal succession. Such episodes show how stories and religious beliefs sit beside accounts of everyday life. Baikie addresses his reader directly and uses familiar comparisons to explain unfamiliar places. The book offers a compact introduction to the subjects that interested a writer of its period about Egypt, with geography, customs and storytelling brought together.
