About this book
Greek legends meet excavated palaces in James Baikie's account of prehistoric Crete. Written for general readers, the book retells stories of Minos, Theseus and the Labyrinth before explaining how archaeological discoveries changed the study of early Greek civilization. Its chapters follow Schliemann's work, the palace at Knossos, discoveries elsewhere on Crete, and the island's connections with Egypt.
Baikie pays attention to the objects and structures from which historians build their arguments: pottery, clay tablets, wall paintings, weights and drainage systems. He compares evidence for links with Asia and Egypt, distinguishing suggestions of shared influence from firmer evidence of contact. For readers interested in the history of archaeology, the 1913 edition shows how excavation reports were presented to a wider audience and used to reconsider familiar legends.
