About this book

Penelope’s Postscripts is by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The contents list names, among others, Penelope in Switzerland, Penelope in Venice, Penelope’s Prints of Wales, Penelope in Devon and Penelope at Home. A section headed A Day in Pestalozzi-Town says "Salemina and I were in Geneva". Salemina picks up her Baedeker and reads in a monotonous, guide-book voice that Yverdon is sixty-one miles from Geneva, three hours forty minutes, on the way to Neuchâtel and Bâle. A speaker says another person may not remember that Jean Henri Pestalozzi lived and taught in Yverdon, and forgets that Pestalozzi was the father of popular education and the sometime teacher of Froebel, our patron saint.

One scene has the diners served at table by "the granddaughter of the house, a little damsel of fifteen summers with sleek brown hair and the eyes of a doe". A narrator remembers something that a man said to the narrator once as they sat at twilight on the bank of the lake near Devorgilla.

Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923) was an American educator and novelist who opened one of the first free kindergartens on the West Coast, in San Francisco, and wrote fiction partly to fund her teacher training work. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm carried her name well beyond it.
