About this book
The book is given as “PENELOPE'S IRISH EXPERIENCES by Kate Douglas Wiggin. Published 1901.” The contents list includes, among others, “Part First, Leinster”, “Part Second, Munster” and “Part Third, Ulster”. Salemina smiles and calls Penelope's idea “a delightful one”, adding “we might add to it a sort of literary pilgrimage to the homes and haunts of Ireland's famous writers”.
Francesca interrupts with “I didn't know that she had any,” and continues, “of course there are Dean Swift and Thomas Moore and Charles Lever.” The text says that “somewhere in the green isle is an unborn poet who will put all this mystery, beauty, passion, romance, and sadness, these tragic memories, these beliefs, these visions of unfulfilled desire, into verse”. The chapter headed “Chapter XVIII. Limavady love-letters.” has the lines “As beautiful Kitty one morning was tripping With a pitcher of milk from the fair of Coleraine”.
