About this book
Per Amica Silentia Lunae is by William Butler Yeats. The prologue is addressed to My Dear Maurice and recalls an afternoon in Calvados last summer when a black Persian, Minoulooshe, heard a wing flutter. A dialogue between speakers labelled Hic and Ille has Hic say that there are men who have made their art out of no tragic war, lovers of life who look for happiness, and Ille answer that those who love the world serve it in action.
A section says that the sense of contact came perhaps but two or three times with clearness and certainty, but left among all to whom it came some trace, a sudden silence, as it were. The text asks whether our masters were right when they declared so solidly that we should be content to know these presences that seemed friendly and near but as the phantom in Coleridge’s poem. A passage about Mr. Yeats says that no man stands so apart in his own perfection as does this Irish poet and playwright.
