About this book
A loose tooth brings an unexpected visitor to the bedside of King Bubi the First. Following his mother's advice, the young ruler leaves the tooth and a polite letter under his pillow, then tries to stay awake for Perez. The mouse arrives wearing spectacles, a straw hat and slippers. When Bubi asks to accompany him on a visit to another child, a sneeze turns the king into a mouse too.
Luis Coloma's children's tale, adapted from Spanish by Lady Moreton, builds its fairy world from familiar household things. A biscuit tin becomes the Perez family's home, white bean skins serve as teacups, and needles arm the guards who protect the king from a cat. Alongside these playful details, Bubi encounters the cold room of a poor boy called Giles. The contrast between palace comforts and that room gives this tooth fairy story a thoughtful edge.
